Greens fees reduced for youths on 4 days

NEOSHO, Mo. - The Neosho City Council on Tuesday night cut greens fees on certain days for young golfers to $3 for nine holes of play.

But the fee reduction at Neosho Municipal Golf Course comes at a price. Youths will be required to attend a $20 program in June on the rules and etiquette of the game to be eligible for the reduced price. Additionally, the reduced price will apply Mondays through Thursdays for youths 15 and younger. The same youths now pay $13 for 18 holes of golf on those days.

Justin Beck, course manager, said the rates "were a little too high" for junior golfers.

"The idea is we're building our future generation of golfers, our future revenue," said Councilman Jim Smallwood. "Golf is something they can do for the rest of their lives."

The city last month approved a senior discount of $22.50, which includes greens and cart fees for each 18 holes of golf played Mondays through Thursdays, days that typically are slower at the course, Beck said.

The council on Tuesday discussed offering discount cards, but the idea was nixed by Mayor Howard Birdsong, who argued that the city needs to establish consistent prices so people will be aware of the costs.

"If we are not careful, we could discount ourselves to bankruptcy," Birdsong said of the 27-hole course. "We don't want to price ourselves out of the market."

In other business, the council:

Approved a service agreement with Bucher, Willis & Ratliff Corp. for design of the airport terminal. The city expects to spend $350,000 at Hugh Robinson Airport.

Heard a report from the water department regarding a leak survey. The department reported that five leaks have been fixed, and 15 still need to be fixed.
