Ok, this is not a "new" release. It's been out for months. But I decided I needed to write a negatvie reviews so........

Dateline, May 2003.

After the debacle of Jason Newstead leaving the band, the 9 month rehab stay of James Hetfield, and releasing 2 piece of crap albums (Load, Re-Load), you would think Metallica would have something to prove. You would think.

All of us metal-heads waited with baited breath as the new Metallica release, ST. ANGER hit the shelves. If you were like me, you had read the early reviews. "This is Metallica's finest album in years". "This is Metallica's return to form". Imagine my shock and horror when I listened to easily the worst album of 2003!! Imagine my horror as I realized that this piece of steaming dung had been produced by a band that at one time was my favorite band bar none!!

Where did Metallica go wrong? Well, let me count the ways:
1. This album sounds like it was recorded in my bathroom
2. Bob Rock on bass.......WTF??
3. Kirk Hammett has not one guitar solo on the entire album!

Ok, I could get past points 2 and 3 if the songs on this album were really good. But, the fact is, they are not! For a album that is supposed to come across as a furious return to form, it just ends up being another contrived piece of crap.

The really unforgivable thing is the production quality of this album. This would be a GREAT demo recording but to release a album that just SOUNDS this bad is very wrong. I literally can not listen to this album. The guitars are muddy. The vocals are often out of tune. The bottom end is too loose. And dear lord, what the hell is going on with that snare drum? If I wanted to hear someone pounding on a trash can, I'd go to a STOMP concert or check out the Blue Man Group.

It is a very rare instance where I can find a record with no redeming qualities. This is one of those times. I had hopes that this album would grow on me, but it did not. For me, I'll just stick with the first 4 Metallica albums and blissfully ignore the crap they have done in the last decade. What a shame.
